Frida Escobedo’s $550M Vision for the Met: A Milestone for Architecture and Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has embarked on its most ambitious capital project to date: the $550-million Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing for modern and contemporary art. Designed by Frida Escobedo, the first female architect to design a wing at the Met, the project symbolizes a significant cultural and architectural milestone.

The Tang Wing will not expand the museum’s footprint but will transform it, adding 50% more gallery space and introducing cutting-edge sustainable design elements. Limestone latticework inspired by traditional Mexican celosía and expansive terraces for contemporary art installations highlight Escobedo’s vision. The design also incorporates green roofing, stormwater retention systems, and enhanced thermal performance to achieve LEED Gold certification.
