What sparked the creative direction behind “Boot It Up”? Was there a particular moment or mood that inspired the concept?
The beat totally captured me at first. It reminded me of a game or a computer “booting up,” and that phrase stuck with me. I love to party, and my friends always say we bring the energy—Boot It Up really captures that vibe.

As an independent artist, you’re involved in all aspects of your work. What challenges—and rewards—have come with that autonomy?
The hardest part is managing everything while working full-time and auditioning for film and TV. At 22, doing it all alone can feel overwhelming—you don’t always know who’s really in your corner. But the most rewarding part is seeing the final product out in the world.

How would you describe the sound and overall vibe of the track to someone who hasn’t heard your music before? Are there themes or messages you hope listeners take from it?
If GloRilla and Charli XCX had a little gay baby, it would be this song. I’ve always loved rap—especially female rappers—and I bring my identity into that space. I don’t shy away from my queerness. But the track is really about partying, confidence, fun—that’s energy anyone can relate to. I hope it connects widely.

Can you walk us through your creative process for this song? Do you have a specific routine or preferred environment for writing and composing?
I started with a freestyle—just one long, open verse. I liked it so much I wrote another. After sitting with it for a few weeks, I felt it still needed something, so I added a middle verse with a totally different tone and delivery. That contrast gave it new flavor. I like to let my music breathe—I never rush it.

Are there tracks on your EP that carry particular personal meaning or help shape the overall tone of the project?
I really love “Feed Ya,” the intro to my EP. I just recorded it a few days before finishing the project, and I think it really sets the tone. I’ve always been into strong rap intros, so I wanted mine to make an impact.

I used my tagline—“Alex Di Brita, you know I’ma feed ya”—in a way that really gets people hyped.

In today’s ever-evolving music landscape, how do you see independent artists shaping the future—and where do you see yourself within that movement?
I don’t think you’ve heard a gay boy rap the way I rap. I want the artists we uplift to reflect the world we actually live in—more voices, more variety. And we need to protect grassroots spaces. Without them, the next generation of headliners won’t have a place to start.

What kind of impact do you hope “Boot It Up” has had on your listeners—both existing fans and new audiences?
Even though my music is explicitly queer, it’s for everyone. Partying, sex, being bold—that’s universal. Whether you’re in the gym, getting ready to go out, or just hyping yourself up, I want my songs to make you feel powerful. That’s the goal every time.

Looking ahead, what aspirations or creative goals are you focusing on next? Any dream collaborations or milestones on your mind?
I’ve been acting professionally since I was 12, and I’m going to keep doing both music and acting. I want to be on major stages—and big screens. I’d love to collaborate with artists I look up to, whether on a track or behind the scenes. I’m thinking big.

What advice would you offer to emerging artists navigating those early years independently?
Protect your energy. Set your boundaries. And most importantly—don’t give up. That mindset keeps you going when things get tough.

Now that the single is out, what part of the release are you most proud of sharing with your audience?
I’ve been filming a lot of visual content to go with the music, and I’m excited fans get to see that now. I love creating full visual worlds that match the vibe and fantasy behind each song. That’s a big part of how I tell the story.
